If you are an aspiring author, but you want to work first as a freelance writer to save money for the book you want to write and publish, you could specialise in a specific freelance writing job position or role. A specific freelance writer job you could do is being a freelance journalist, which offers several advantages to other freelance writing work positions.

If you think that doing a freelance writing job as a journalist is not a good career start or stepping stone for an aspiring author, it is noteworthy to mention that many popular authors or writers worked as journalists during the initial phase of their writing careers.

Famous authors such as Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, J.D. Salinger, John Steinbeck, Margaret Mitchell, and T.S. Eliot, started their writing careers as journalists or reporters for magazines, newspapers and other publications. Working as journalists gave them the experiences of developing their creative writing skills, doing writings that were subjected to numerous editing processes, and submitting high quality writings under strict submission deadlines.

Therefore, doing a freelance writing job as a journalist either on a part-time or full-time basis would help you in two ways. It would enable you to earn supplementary income and it would develop and improve your creative writing skills, which could be useful during the time you are writing your first book.
