Pat Hoy, MPP for Chatham-Kent-Essex, along with Angelo Minato from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, were on hand to present three local organizations with grants totaling $61,000 last Thursday.
The Leamington Tomato Festival received $15,000 to purchase security fencing and increase community awareness.
The Little Tomato Theatre received $6,000 to purchase lighting equipment and a camera and assist with venue rental
Special Equestrians Therapeutic Riding Association (SPEQTRA) received $40,000 to improve their facility and buy adjustable saddles.
"These grant splay a vital role in helping community organizations fulfill their mandate and reach out to more people, all making Leamington a better place to live," said Hoy.
Kaitlyn Clifford, the 2008 Miss Tomato Festival, and a member of the Little Tomato Theatre group, spoke on behalf of the young actors. "Leamington is a community that has always fostered and motivated young people," she said. "We're happy and feel fortunate to have received this grant."
"SPEQTRA started with one horse and has grown so much," said Dorothy St. John.
"We are very pleased to be receiving much needed monetary support from the Trillium Foundation. Our first grant four years ago enabled us to grow from 5 special needs clients to 50," said Liz Windsor, also of SPEQTRA.
Dave Campbell, chair of the Leamington Tomato Festival said, "Every level of government has recognized the importance of the Tomato Festival to the Municipality of Leamington. This grant will enable us to engage more volunteers into serving the community."
